There are 4 major risk factors:
1. The Individual Stressors:
- Anxiety/Stress
- Depression
- Poor body image/self-esteem
- Low energy
- Fear of intimacy
- Anger
- Feelings of rejection
- Feelings of abandonment
- Career overload
- Sexual abuse
- Physical abuse
- Emotional trauma
- Negative cognitive distortions
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Sexual orientation conflicts
2. The Families of Origin (Intergenerational):
- Individual/Religious values and beliefs towards sex and/or sexual intimacy
- Cultural attitudes towards sex and/or sexual intimacy
- Family-of-origin difficulties
3. The Couple's Relationship:
- Relationship issues/marital distress
- Current sexual context/script
- Intimacy difficulties
- Infidelity
- Power struggles
- Toxic communication
- Criticism from the partner
- Chronic/severe illness in partner
- Partner's sexual difficulty
4. Medical Factors:
- Antipsychotics
- Antidepressants
- Recreational drugs
