NGU and Cervicitis

What are NGU and Cervititis?

Non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) or non-specific urethritis (NSU) is an infection of the urethra (the passage inside the penis through which urine and semen pass), which is not caused by gonorrhoea or Chlamydia. It is most commonly diagnosed in men.

Some of the likely causes are bacteria such as Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma genitalim, parasites such as Trichomonas vaginalis and viruses such as herpes simplex virus. However, it is likely there are some causes which have not yet been identified.

Cervititis is the female equivalent of NGU and means inflammation of the cervix, which is the neck of the womb.

How is it transmitted?

NGU is passed on by vaginal, anal or oral sex without a condom with someone who has the infection.

Symptoms of NGU or Cervicitis

Some men have no symptoms at all.

When symptoms are present, for men they may include:

• Discharge (milky or push-like) from the penis
• Stinging or burning while urinating
• Itching, tingling, burning or irritation inside the penis
• Pain and swelling in the testicles

When symptoms are present, for women they may include:

• Pain/burning feeling when urinating
• Unusual discharge from the vagina
• Lower abdominal pain/pain during sex
