GonorrhoeaWhat is Gonorrhoea?Gonorrhoea, also spelled gonorrhea, is a bacterial infection of the genitals usually, but it can also affect the anus, mouth, throat or eyes. Gonorrhoea is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a bacterium that can grow and multiply in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes in women and in the urethra in women and men. The bacterium can also grow in the mouth, throat, eyes and anus. Prevelance of GonorrhoeaGonorrhoea is a very common infectious disease. In Australia, the population rate of diagnosis of gonorrhoea increased from 1998 to 2006 for both males and females, however from 2006 to 2007 the population rate of diagnosis of gonorrhoea declined by 15% among males and by 6% among females 2008 Annual Surveillance Report: HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and Sexually Transmissible Infections in Australia How is it transmitted?Gonorrhoea is passed on through an exchange of body fluids (semen, blood and vaginal fluids) during unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex with someone who has the infection. Gonorrhoea can also be spread from a mother with gonorrhoea to her baby at birth and is a cause of blindness in newborns. It can't be caught from sharing towels, toilet seats or swimming pools.
