External Male Sex Organs

The external male organs include the penis and the scrotum.

The Penis

The penis is the male sex organ. It is composed of three cylinders, which contain erectile spongelike tissue that fills with blood during sexual excitement to cause an erection. Two lie on the upper side of the penis, which are called corpora cavernosa and one lies on the bottom which is called the central corpus spongiosum and contains the urethra.

The Scrotum

The scrotum is a sac of loose wrinkly skin that becomes lightly covered in pubic hair at puberty. It has two compartments that hold the two testicles (testes).

Internal Male Sex Organs

The internal male organs include the testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate gland and Cowper's glands.

The Testicles

The testicles are also referred as testes, balls or nuts. The testes serve two functions. They secrete sex hormones, androgens, and produce mature sperm cells. The most important androgen is testosterone.

Epididymis

In the Epididymis, sperm matures for about 10 to 14 days and some faulty or old sperm gets reabsorbed.

Vas Deferens

The Vas Deferens lies near the skin surface of the spermatic cord in the scrotum and serves as a conduit for mature sperm.

Seminal Vesicles

The two seminal vesicles are small glands that lie behind the bladder and open into the ejaculatory duct, where the fluids they secrete combine with sperm. This fluid is rich in fructose, a form of sugar, which nourishes the sperm and helps them become active and motile, which is a major factor in male fertility.

The Prostate Gland

The prostate gland lies beneath the bladder and is the size and shape of a chestnut. It secretes prostatic fluid, which neutralizes some of the acidity of the vaginal tract, which prolongs the lifespan of sperm as it spreads through the female reproductive system.

Cowper's Gland

The two Cowper's glands lie below the prostate and they empty their secretions into the urethra. This fluid gets secreted at the tip of the penis and precedes ejaculation. It often contains sperm.
